Why Rosh Hashanah is 2 Days Festival

The summer solstice never mind: for Jews all over the world, the longest day of the year starts at sundown and continues a complete two days.

Although Rosh Hashanah means "beginning of the entire year," in that age the new year was usually computed in the start of the month of Nisan, in the springtime.

The first known descriptions of Rosh Hashanah as we now understand it come in the oral traditions compiled and arranged in the Mishnah, around 200 C.E. By then the vacation was often observed over two days due to the uncertainty of forecasting which day the sighting of the new moon--which indicated the beginning of the new month--would be declared by the Sanhedrin, the Jewish religious court that was central. Because it took time for news of the statements in the Sanhedrin to traveling and observant Jews needed seriously to prevent even work that was casual the two-day Rosh Hashanah observance started as a safeguard. Today Rosh Hashanah is the sole holiday celebrated for 2 days both within and outside of Israel.
